Flying into disaster in the Aerosoft H36 Dimona

I was looking forward to my next virtual soaring flight to be recorded on YouTube after a month’s vacation in Tasmania.  Tasmania is a great destination and it was a very enjoyable trip overall but being away from my flight simulation hobby for that long was difficult for me.

(As usual, there is a link to the YouTube videos of this flight in two parts at the end of this post)

I wanted to use the Orbx Compton-Abbas (EGHA) scenery for this flight but this is not really a gliding field, so a motor-glider that was more of a cross-over between a single engine sports plane and a glider than it is a glider seemed to be an appropriate choice. The Aerosoft H36 Dimona fits this requirement nicely.

CumulusX! does not always play nicely with real-world weather updates

Related to this post is a YouTube video featuring one my virtual cross-country soaring tasks in the Aerosoft Discus X. The video can be accessed at the end of this post.

As a follow up to my previous YouTube video that featured testing of CumulusX! with PILOT’S FS Global Real Weather engine, the logical next thing to do would have been to test CumulusX! in a similar way using Active Sky Next (ASN) to take a real-weather snapshot without any further downloaded updates. But while preparing for that 2nd test flight, I was side tracked by the notion of doing a demonstration flight based on dynamic real-world weather with periodic updates injected from Active Sky Next. This could reaffirm my assertion that CumulusX! does not always play nicely with real-world weather updates, and to be honest I was beginning to doubt that assertion. Continue reading

FSX Virtual Soaring at Laufenselden with real-world weather

Related to this post is a YouTube video featuring one my virtual cross-country soaring tasks in the Aerosoft Discus X. The video can be accessed at the end of this post.

I designed a relatively short cross-country task at Laufenselden in Germany for testing  the compatibility of real-world weather injection with CumulusX!.  CumulusX! is a competition soaring environment add-on for FSX, which I highly recommend to anyone interested in virtual soaring in FSX (SP2) or FSX with Acceleration Pack.

For my first test flight using this task, I chose to test the compatibility of the  PILOT’S FS Global Real Weather (FSGRW) add-on with CumulusX!.   Continue reading
